World Horse Welfare Unveils Ambitious Environmental Commitments at 2024 Annual Conference.
At the 2024 Annual Conference in London, World Horse Welfare announced a groundbreaking Environmental Sustainability Strategy, marking a significant step towards its goal of becoming net zero. This strategy, developed with the assistance of White Griffin, a sustainability consultancy, outlines eight key goals to integrate environmental consciousness into every aspect of the charity’s work.
Chief Executive Roly Owers highlighted the importance of addressing environmental impact: “Our environmental welfare strategy acknowledges the interconnectedness of the wellbeing of people, horses and the environment.
“This strategy focuses upon the ways in which we will ensure environmental sustainability is embedded in our own operations, as well as our research, education and influencing work.
“We are at the beginning of our journey into these complex connections, and we do not have all the answers. But we are committed to learning – and crucially, acting – to move forward towards a world that is kinder for people, the environment and of course horses.”
World Horse Welfare’s plan includes UK-based projects, like sustainable land management practices at its farms, aimed at benefiting both the welfare of the 300 horses in its care and the surrounding ecosystem. Plans are also underway to collaborate with wildlife charities to enhance conservation efforts at visitor centres.
Internationally, the organization will continue to support communities facing environmental challenges, helping them develop sustainable practices that harmonize with local ecosystems.
Horse owners and enthusiasts can now access the full Environmental Welfare Strategy, as well as a new collection of resources on World Horse Welfare’s website. These resources include webinars, educational guides, case studies, and practical tips, helping owners make more sustainable choices for their animals.
