Discover What Works and Delivers Value for Money!
Why spend on an expensive coat that fails to keep you warm and dry? We’ve gathered thousands of honest ratings from real users to ensure you find the perfect option that meets your needs. Make a smart choice and get the quality you deserve without wasting your money!
A survey evaluating users’ ratings of riding coats was conducted via social media and remained open for four weeks. Participation was anonymous; however, respondents could opt to leave their email address for entry into a prize draw to win a riding coat (brand unspecified) valued at £260.
Participants could rate up to three different coats and were asked to evaluate them across 19 factors, including fit, riding comfort, waterproofing, quality, durability, ease of cleaning, drying time after getting wet, and customer service. In total, 99 different brands of riding coats were rated.
For the final analysis, only brands that received 1% or more of the total ratings were included. An overall score was calculated based on key factors, excluding customer service, which was analyzed separately as not all respondents interacted with customer service during their experience.
Cleaning:
When it came to cleaning, Jack Murphy, Stierna, Dublin, Baleno, Musto, Regatta, Mountain Horse, Uhip and Pikeur all had an overall score of 8/10 or higher. But it’s probably important to note that many coats scored low for whether they retained their waterproofing. In this respect, Baleno (9.1), Stierna (8.9) and Jack Murphy (8.5) came out best.

Customer Service
Jack Murphy achieved a perfect 10 for customer service! Although Uhip, Regatta and Horze also scored 9 or above. Sadly, 7 brands scored 6 or less. Although as Pikeur and Mark Todd did not receive any ratings, a score could not be calculated, so this may not be bad. It may just mean that no one had to contact customer service as the product was very good.

Overall Results!
Overall, Stierna, one of the most expensive brands, came out top with a score of 9/10 . The overall score is based on the average of all the scores in the survey. These were; Fit, Riding Features, Riding comfort, Length for riding, 100% Waterproof, Warmth, Breathability, Does it upset your horse, quality (zips), Pockets (number, location, waterproof), Ease of Mounting/Dismounting, Range of sizes, Wow factor, Durability, Ease of sourcing/availability, Overal quality, Value for money.

PRICE

In the following two charts we’ve tried to match up price with quality and performance to offer some purchasing suggestions depending on how much you feel comfortable spending.

Summary
The adage “you get what you pay for” looks to be true here. Of the top rated 5 coats, these 5 were the most expensive: Steirna, Baleno, Musto, Uhip, and Pikeur.
Steirna was first overall and second for cleaning, but was one of the more expensive brands, although there were cheaper options within their range.
Baleno scored well both overall and for cleaning and was also one of the more expensive brands.
Musto was also up in the top scorers, both overall and on cleaning, but again in the most expensive range.
Uhip and Pikeur scored very well overall but were let down by low scores for cleaning, so if cleaning is less important to you, then these brands would be worth considering, but again, they are in the most expensive range.
Mountain Horse in the mid-price range would be worth considering.
None of the coats performed really poorly. Even Dublin, which only scored 6.2, could be a cheap option. The only one that really came out poorly was DRIZA-BONE; it ranked very low overall and for cleaning and was one of the more expensive!
