The Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance (EIDS) team, in partnership with key equine industry stakeholders, continues its vital work to monitor, control, and prevent infectious disease outbreaks affecting horses across the UK. EIDS provides multiple surveillance schemes to support early detection and reporting of specific equine diseases and offers a free disease control advice service for veterinary professionals.
In collaboration with BEVA, Defra, and APHA, EIDS produces the Equine Quarterly Disease Surveillance Report, sharing essential updates on disease trends and advice. The latest report includes insights into several timely topics:
- West Nile Virus: Advice on vaccinations for horses travelling to regions with active mosquito vectors during high-risk seasons.
- Artervac Shortage: Information on the current unavailability of the Artervac vaccine.
- Equine Influenza Update: An analysis from virologists at the University of Cambridge, detailing recent monitoring of the virus in the UK.
- Hyalomma marginatum: Examination of this tick species as an emerging vector for equine diseases in the UK.
