Dr David Marlin will be presenting new research at this year’s British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Congress, taking place in Birmingham.
David’s abstract, “Does ridden exercise influence tongue colour: a standardised photographic approach,” has been selected for inclusion in the Clinical Research – Biomechanics session. His presentation is scheduled for:
📅 Thursday 11th September 2025
⏰ 9:06am
📍 Hall 8B, Birmingham ICC
The session, chaired by Jodie Daglish and sponsored by the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB), focuses on biomechanics and includes other key topics such as noseband pressures, bridle type and conflict behaviours, and the influence of horse discipline on epaxial muscle.
Dr Marlin’s study investigates whether tongue colour changes during ridden exercise – an innovative, standardised photographic method designed to provide objective insights into equine health and welfare. The findings could contribute to better understanding of the relationship between exercise, circulation, and oral health in horses.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Marlin said:
“It’s an honour to share this work at BEVA Congress. Tongue colour is an underexplored but potentially important welfare indicator, and we hope this approach will encourage more research and discussion in the equine veterinary and scientific community.”
The BEVA Congress is recognised as one of the world’s largest equine veterinary conferences, bringing together practitioners, researchers, and industry leaders to share the latest developments in equine health and welfare.
