The Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) has announced a delay in the rollout of its new measuring device for nosebands at FEI events. Originally scheduled for implementation on January 1, 2025, the introduction has been postponed to May 1, 2025.
Reasons for the Delay
The postponement allows additional time for educating FEI officials and the wider equestrian community about the device. It also accommodates a slight delay in the delivery of the measuring tools. The FEI has confirmed that once the devices are ready for distribution, both officials and the community will be promptly informed. FEI Stewards will receive one device free of charge.
About the Measuring Device
The new FEI Measuring Device is a pass-through tool designed in collaboration with external experts. It is inserted under the noseband, over the nasal bone, and drawn through from top to bottom to assess the tightness of the noseband.
- Quick and Simple Test: The process takes only a few seconds.
- Pass/Fail Criteria: If the device can pass through the noseband, it is deemed loose enough. If not, the noseband is considered too tight, and consequences as outlined in Article 1044.8 of the FEI Veterinary Regulations will apply.
Commitment to Horse Welfare
The FEI’s introduction of the measuring device is part of its broader commitment to equine welfare. Tight nosebands have been a contentious issue, with concerns raised about their impact on horse comfort and wellbeing. The device provides a standardized and objective method to ensure compliance with welfare guidelines.
The FEI encourages all members of the equestrian community to familiarize themselves with the device and its use ahead of the new implementation date in May 2025.
