A total of 183 equine influenza (EI) outbreaks were identified across the UK between 23 March and 8 September 2026, according to the latest update from Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance (EIDS).
Of these, 136 laboratory-confirmed outbreaks across 57 UK counties were officially reported to EIDS, while a further 47 laboratory-confirmed outbreaks were identified but had not been formally reported to the surveillance scheme.
Genomic surveillance has also identified the introduction of an equine influenza H3N8 Florida clade 1 (FC1) variant into the UK, thought to have occurred in early 2026.
Despite concerns that transmission could increase significantly during the summer, EIDS suggests that effective communication across the equine industry, rapid veterinary intervention and greater use of diagnostic testing may have helped limit a further surge in outbreaks.
The organisation is calling for continued improvements in biosecurity, including appropriate quarantine procedures and increased vaccination uptake.
Horse owners concerned about equine influenza or possible symptoms in their horses should contact their vet for advice.
